Thomas O’Connor fired an equaliser to earn Gillingham a point.
The home side took a guide when striker Tyler Smith was allowed to run unchallenged to the Gills’ box also sidestepped Connor Ogilvie before lashing a drive.
But Gillingham were rewarded for pressure when substitute Mark Marshall that was impressive crossed deep from the best and, although Ogilvie’s volley was parried by Anssi Jaakola, O’Connor was on hand to net the rebound from six metres.
A first half of few chances saw Jonson Clarke-Harris nod the ball over Bonham after 32 minutes for O’Connor to get clear and back.
Jaakkola did not have a save to make until the 63rd minute when an Olly Lee free-kick was held above his head. But the people looked the more likely winners following equalising.
While Rovers missing skipper Ollie Clarke, who limped off after 54 gillingham needed to replace Barry Fuller after just 13 minutes, and also right wing-back Josh Hare that was transported off with 73 gone.
